Suzuki Unveils DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM Supermoto

News Story

Suzuki has unveiled two new models: the DR-Z4S road-going dirt bike and the DR-Z4SM supermoto, both powered by the brand-new 398cc, single-cylinder engine. This engine delivers 38hp and 37Nm of torque in both variants, comparable to the engines used in small-displacement KTM and Triumph models, which are produced by Bajaj.

Key Features of the Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM

Engine & Gearbox: The 398cc engine is paired with a 5-speed gearbox and a slipper clutch. The bikes share a twin-spar frame with an aluminium subframe and swingarm.

Riding Modes & Electronic Aids: Both models come with three riding modes (A, B, and C) and traction control with two levels that can be turned off. They also feature switchable ABS, and the SM and S models have a Gravel mode for enhanced off-road performance.

Brakes & Suspension: The DR-Z4SM features larger front brake discs (310mm) and uses 17-inch wheels fitted with sticky Dunlop tyres for better street performance. The DR-Z4S, on the other hand, uses 80/100-21 (front) and 120/80-18 (rear) dual-purpose tyres for off-road capability. The suspension travel is 280mm at the front and 296mm at the rear for the DR-Z4S, and 260mm front and 277mm rear for the DR-Z4SM.

Weight & Dimensions: The DR-Z4SM has a seat height of 890mm and weighs 154kg with its 8.7-litre fuel tank full.

The DR-Z4S has a higher seat height of 920mm and weighs 151kg, 3kg lighter than the SM, with a larger front suspension travel.

Differences Between DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM

Wheel Size & Tyres: The DR-Z4SM is a supermoto bike with street-oriented 17-inch wheels, while the DR-Z4S is more of a dirt bike with 21-inch front wheels, suitable for off-road riding.

Brakes: The DR-Z4SM has a larger front disc brake (310mm) compared to the 270mm disc on the DR-Z4S, offering better stopping power suited for road use.

Suzuki’s Indian Plans

Currently, Suzuki offers a range of smaller bikes (125cc to 250cc) and large bikes like the Hayabusa, V-Strom 800DE, and GSX-8R in India. The introduction of the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM would fill the gap between these categories, offering a new middle ground in Suzuki’s lineup, though it remains to be seen if these 400cc models will be launched in India.

In summary, the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM combine modern features, adjustable electronics, and a versatile engine in two distinct forms—one for off-road adventures and the other for street-focused fun.
