News Story
BMW’s flagship adventure motorcycle has embarked on its next chapter, evolving from the venerable R 1250 GS into the all-new R 1300 GS. This remarkable machine is set to redefine the adventure biking landscape with its impressive features and enhancements.
Power Unleashed
At the heart of the R 1300 GS is the most potent series production boxer engine ever crafted by BMW. Displacing precisely 1,300cc, it churns out a breathtaking 145hp at 7,750rpm and a formidable 149Nm at 6,500rpm. This represents a notable increase of 9hp and 6Nm compared to its predecessor. While peak power remains at the same rpm, peak torque now arrives 250rpm higher. Remarkably, despite the larger displacement, the engine maintains a more compact form, thanks to the placement of the gearbox beneath it.
Lighter and More Agile
The R 1300 GS boasts a reimagined chassis. An all-new sheet metal steel main frame provides heightened stiffness, while the tubular steel rear sub-frame has been replaced with a lightweight die-cast aluminum unit. Both the front and rear suspension systems are entirely new, still following BMW’s signature telelever front fork and paralever rear suspension design.
The result of these enhancements is a significant reduction in weight, with the R 1300 GS shedding an impressive 12kg compared to its predecessor, now tipping the scales at 237kg. However, it’s worth noting that the new aluminum fuel tank, although slightly smaller at 19 liters, still promises ample riding range. With a more potent engine and reduced weight, the power-to-weight ratio has seen a remarkable boost from 546.2hp per tonne to 611.8hp per tonne.
Enhanced Features and Technology
BMW has enriched the R 1300 GS with an array of new features. Four standard riding modes—Rain, Ride, Eco, and Enduro—offer greater versatility to riders. The motorcycle comes equipped with a Bluetooth-enabled TFT color display, an adjustable windscreen, and an LED headlight (with an optional cornering function). The motorcycle’s design has also undergone a transformation, featuring sleeker and more refined bodywork.
For the first time in a BMW GS model, radar-assisted safety features take center stage, including Active Cruise Control (ACC), Front Collision Warning (FCW), and Lane Change Warning (LCW). These features enhance rider safety by maintaining a set distance from the vehicle ahead and providing brake intervention to avoid collisions.
Optional extras include electronically adjustable suspension, with the new Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) adapting spring stiffness based on the selected riding mode and conditions. Moreover, riders can opt for adaptive vehicle height, allowing automatic adjustments according to changing conditions.
Arrival in India
While the global unveiling has just taken place, the eagerly anticipated R 1300 GS is expected to make its way to the Indian market in the coming months. It is likely to be offered in a ‘Pro’ variant, with several optional extras included as standard. Given the substantial upgrades, a price increase over the current R 1250 GS Pro, priced at Rs 20.55 lakh (ex-showroom, India), can be expected.
In conclusion, the BMW R 1300 GS is not merely an evolution; it’s a revolution in the world of adventure biking. With its formidable power, reduced weight, advanced technology, and safety features, it’s poised to set new benchmarks in the adventure motorcycle segment. Adventure enthusiasts, gear up for an exciting journey with the all-new R 1300 GS.
