KTM to Sell Big Bikes Through Exclusive Showrooms in India

KTM’s Return to the Big Bike Market

After a significant hiatus, KTM is re-entering the big bike market in India. This time, the company is doing things differently. They are setting up a dedicated dealer network exclusively for their big bikes.

Exclusive KTM Showrooms for Big Bikes

Initially, KTM’s big bikes will be sold through exclusive showrooms. Existing KTM showrooms will also be upgraded. The 990 Duke and 890 Adventure are likely candidates for the Indian market.

KTM Big Bike Showroom Details

In 2020, KTM sold 100 units of the BS4 790 Duke in India. Despite the higher price than locally manufactured KTMs, the 790 was sold and serviced through existing dealers, which diluted the premium experience.

Now, KTM India is making a long-term plan for its big bikes in India. The first step is setting up an exclusive premium dealership network in select metro cities. These showrooms will be limited in number. Initially, KTM’s large-capacity models will only be sold through these select showrooms. Eventually, select existing KTM dealers will also get the opportunity to sell these premium machines, depending on the location.

Potential KTM Models for India

It’s unclear which KTM big bikes will come to India. However, the 890 Adventure and the 990 Duke are plausible options. If KTM decides to go super premium, we could even see the 1390 Super Duke R on Indian roads. This model, being a full import from Mattighofen, Austria, would have a price tag well over Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom).

As for the 790 Duke, it’s now manufactured by KTM’s Chinese partner, CFMoto, for worldwide distribution. The European-spec bike makes less power than before. Given its slow sales initially, it’s unlikely that KTM will bring it back to the Indian market.

Husqvarna’s Entry into India

This move also opens the door for Husqvarna’s big bike portfolio to enter India. Husqvarna’s big bike lineup includes the Svartpilen 801, which is essentially a 790 in a stylish design, similar to how the Norden 901 is based on the 890 Adventure.

A New Era for KTM in India

KTM’s strategic move to set up exclusive showrooms and upgrade existing ones marks a new era for the brand in India. With potential models like the 890 Adventure and 990 Duke, and the possibility of the 1390 Super Duke R, KTM enthusiasts have much to look forward to. Additionally, the introduction of Husqvarna’s big bike lineup adds another exciting dimension to the Indian motorcycle market.
