Honda has launched the NX500 E-Clutch in India at Rs 7.44 lakh ex-showroom, bringing its proprietary clutch-less shifting technology to the middleweight adventure segment. Apart from the new E-Clutch system, the motorcycle remains mechanically and visually the same as before.
Honda’s E-Clutch uses a pair of electronic actuators to operate the clutch automatically during gearshifts, as well as when the bike comes to a stop or moves off. Riders can still use the conventional clutch lever manually whenever they want, while the gear pedal continues to be operated in the usual way.
What is new
The biggest update is the addition of E-Clutch, which increases the NX500’s weight by just 3kg. The bike now tips the scales at 199kg, but Honda says the system is compact enough to avoid major changes to the motorcycle’s overall character.
The NX500 continues to be offered in two colours: white and black, and bookings are now open at authorised Honda BigWing dealerships across India.
Engine and hardware
Mechanically, the NX500 stays unchanged. It uses the familiar 471cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine, which makes 47hp at 8,500rpm and 43Nm at 6,500rpm. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox, with the clutch operation now handled electronically in E-Clutch form.
Suspension duties are taken care of by a USD fork at the front and a monoshock at the rear. The motorcycle rides on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels, while braking is handled by dual 296mm front discs with radially mounted Nissin calipers and a 240mm rear disc.
Features and equipment
Honda has kept the NX500 deliberately simple. The motorcycle gets a 5-inch TFT display and basic switchgear, but it does not come with ride modes or other advanced electronic aids.
The only rider assistance features are dual-channel ABS and switchable traction control. Even the throttle remains cable-actuated, underlining the NX500’s straightforward, no-nonsense character.
Pricing and rivals
At Rs 7.44 lakh, the NX500 E-Clutch is not a budget-friendly option. The new variant is Rs 1.11 lakh more expensive than the outgoing standard version, which already sat in premium territory.
Its closest rivals include the BMW F 450 GS Trophy at Rs 5.30 lakh and the Kawasaki Versys 650 at Rs 8.63 lakh. While the NX500 is priced above some rivals and below others, Honda is clearly banking on the bike’s dependability, smooth twin-cylinder engine, and the convenience of E-Clutch technology to justify the premium.
Market position
The NX500 E-Clutch is aimed at riders who want a refined mid-capacity adventure tourer with less manual clutch effort in traffic and on longer rides. Honda is positioning it as a practical, easy-to-live-with motorcycle rather than a feature-loaded tech showcase.
That should help it appeal to buyers who value long-term reliability and low running costs as much as performance. The E-Clutch version is expected to carve out its own niche, just like the earlier NX500 did.
